In The Niteshop, Malique collects and remixes products/objects that have cultural significance in certain communities. They embody a sense of home/belonging to some.
For next week, I would like to ask you to individually photograph 3 objects/products that signify a sense of home/belonging to you. It can be something which is found at a store or somewhere
Every Sunday in Slovakia is a tradition to have a Sunday lunch with your family. The dish differs from family to family but usually, it consists of chicken soup with this type of noodles that I chose as an object. I have a very strong bond with this tradition, now more than ever because I don´t have grandparents anymore and the tradition is no longer in our family. But my grandma gave me the recipes on cards and now I cook from them. Even here in the Netherlands I make soup and call my friends over zoom to chat and we call our chats Sunday soup.
I don´t understand how is this possible but at every party no matter in which city I find myself drinking borovička, which is our national pride (alcohol). I guess all the Slovak people just bring it here with them like a token of their home. England, Scotland, Rotterdam, it randomly appears on parties in plastic sprite or coca-cola bottles. And we drink it even though we avoid it in Slovakia in other countries we find it like some magical potion. That was the first thing I was offered at a house party when I got here.
Scarf. Are part of our visual culture. When I first got here I saw lots of Slavic girls wear them not only as a fashion statement but also as a thing that reminded them of their culture. I got this one from my Slovak friend that also studies here.
